Q: Can my 6 year have allergy asthma when symptoms only prevail at night?
My 6 year daughter was diagnosed with Bronchitis 3 weeks ago. After the first week of antibiotics she was not getting better and was waking up in the middle of the night coughing, which would then lead to vomiting. I took her back to the GP who put her on a stronger antibiotic and referred her for physiotherapy and nebulising twice daily. At the end of the second week, after two course of antibiotics and antihestimines, my daughter suffered what I was sure was an asthma attack. She woke up coughing, starting vomiting and couldn’t breathe, she went purple in the face. When rushing her to hospital, chest Xrays were clear and I was referred to a paediacitrician who advised my daughter has mould allergy. Asthma tests were conducted during the day and she was clear. However in the evening my daughter still wakes up coughing and can’t breathe. Is it possible that she could have allergy asthma whereby the symptoms would not be detected during the day?
Desperate to help my little girl!
A: Yes. It’s called “Nocturnal Asthma” . Go to http://www.essortment.com/nocturnalasthma_riqf.htm to get some information of nocturnal asthma.
Q: Do the following symptoms sound like possible allergy or asthma symptoms?
For the past week I’ve had this terrible wheezing and deep, dry cough. I’ve had this feeling that something has been stuck in my throat for the past 2 days. I don’t have a runny nose at all. Lastly, I get tired and out of breath very easily for the past week. I am 25 and in relatively good health and have never been diagnosed with asthma. I’ve never smoked. I’ve lived in the same area for 2 years and haven’t had allergy problems before either. Are these things that can start suddenly? I have been stressed as well because I was laid off from my job last week. I don’t have any insurance because of this and I’m not really sure what to do. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance!
A: Stress can do really things to your body, but if the wheezing continues you really need to see a doctor.
Call your local library’s Reference Department. Ask them if your local Health Dept. can help you, or if there’s a free clinic near you. Otherwise, you just have to borrow the money or something. Remember, your health really does come before anything else. Give it a few more days, till you can’t stand it, or if you get a fever over 102.5.
I hope you just get well tomorrow!! Good luck to you.
Q: Are there any colors of cats that are less likely to trigger allergies/asthma?
My son has asthma triggered by seasonal allergies & may have a cat allergy. But we haven’t had a cat in the house for 8 years, so I don’t know if he really has a cat allergy. We have had dogs in the house for the past 6 without any trouble. Are there any types of cats that are less likely to trigger allergy/asthma symptoms (longhair/shorhair or dark/light color)?
A: Hi Lori…I would like to share some supportive information we give to people who suffer from cat allergies as many are unaware that “all” cats regardless of breed or if long, short or no hair breed of cats can cause allergies. Any vet can confirm this fact.
Older books on cats and cat care usually blame the allergy on cat fur e.g. breathing in small particles of the fur itself. Some blame it specifically on the cat’s guard hairs (the long hairs within the cat’s coat) and may recommend keeping a breed which lacks these guard hairs e.g. Devon/Cornish Rex or the hairless Sphynx. Referring to these breeds as hypoallergenic or allergen-free is incorrect as It is not the hair which causes the allergic reaction.
The real culprit appears to be a glycoprotein, Fel d1 which is secreted by the sebaceous glands and is the major cat allergen. This allergen is found in the fur, pelt, saliva, serum, urine, mucous, salivary glands, and hair roots of the cat. The main sources of the allergen, however, are the skin and saliva.
When a cat grooms/washes itself, saliva is deposited on its fur (or skin in the case of hairless cats). The saliva dries into dust (dander or dandruff) which is released airborne when a cat scratches or moves and when humans stroke or brush a cat. Fel d1.
All cats groom themselves, even those which lack guard hairs or which lack hair altogether (e.g. Sphynx). The dust forms on all types of cat hair or directly on the cat’s skin if it lacks fur. Hairless Sphynx cats produce dandruff directly on their skin and though they produce less of it than furred cats, they can still produce enough to trigger an allergic reaction. An allergy occurs when the body over-reacts to a substance (allergen) and produces excessive amounts of histamine. Excessive histamine production leads to the irritating symptoms associated with cat-allergy – itchy eyes, sneezing, skin rash etc.
Although Fel d1 is the protein most often associated with allergies, humans are very variable and there will be some people who develop allergies to other feline proteins. Some people are unaffected by Siamese cats, but allergic to other cats and some people have reported whose cat alergy is only triggered by male cats (even if the cats are neutered).
Anyhow, please consider reading the following website literature to learn more about the Fel d1 protein and how it affects allergies in humans.
http://allergies.about.com/cs/cats/a/aa013100a.htm
http://www.allergysa.org/pet.htm#cat
Here’s a video (located on the webpage on the right side) by a veterinarian about the allergen Fel d1 and how it affects cat allergy sufferers. It’s an organization who is is selectively breeding cats without the Fel d1 protein to make available for sale for those who who suffer allergies but would like to own a cat: http://www.allerca.com/
People with mild allergies to cats can benefit from Benadryl, Allegra, Singulair, Clairitin, Zyrtec other similar antihistamines. One may work better than one another if you are willing to experiment to see which works best. If the allergy is more severe neither a cat born without the Fel D1 protein or the anti-histamines has been successful.
Q: Allergies And Asthma Symptoms (or signs in other words)?
what are symptoms of having allergies
what are symptoms of having asthma
A: I have both asthma and allergies.
Allergies for environment are runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes and skin my are immediately triggered when a cat or dog is in the room
Asthma is hard to diagnose and recommend if you even think you have it to get to the doctor asap if an asthma attack is serve enough it can kill you.
Q: Can an allergy to sulfites cause asthma or does it have to be a pre existing condition?
I think (self-diagnosed) I have an allergy or intolerance for sulfites. It started off with hives, then progressed into my throat tightening a bit, now I have asthma like symptoms. I’ve been in perfect lung health my whole life, so I’m wondering if there’s a correlation between sulfites and this onset of asthma.
A: Contact the Feingold Association.
www.feingold.org
I believe they list sulfites in their approved food lists. They maybe can help you with this. This could be very dangerous, especially if you do have a real asthma attack w/out an inhaler. Contact your Dr and tell him/her about your symptoms.
Q: Can allergy shots increase symptoms between shots?
I JUST started receiving allergy shots and have only had two injections of the most diluted serums possible. In the past two weeks, my asthma and allergies have seemed so much worse than they were earlier. Now, I do admit that this time of year is really bad for me with all the mold and ragweed, so it could just be environmental.
What do you think? Is it possible that my measley dose of allergens yesterday could increase my symptoms today?
A: I suppose it’s feasible because each dose you get is a smidgeon stronger than the last to help you build up a resistance to the allergen.
Q: whats the best way to avoid asthma and dust allergy?
I have dust allergy, just started recently, i cant even sleep because of wheezing, i have cold and throat infection too, i feel too difficult to breath, once in every month for atleast 5days i suffer this, doctor told me its the symptom of asthma so becareful, i am 21 now, even from my child hood days i had dust allergy but parents didnt take it as serious now i suffer a lot, when i have allergy i feel something hard in my lungs feeling like heavy weight i cant breath properly after taking antibotics it will be fine for some days again it will start. whats the best way to avoid asthma.. i have almost all the symptoms of asthma like regular cold, difficult to breath so on… do i have asthma? i heard that there is no treatment to cure asthma whats the best way to avoid it.
A: Well outside there is little you can do unless you wear a mask-however in doors you can do the following
1. remove rugs and curtains in your room(they hold dust.
2. Put up blinds on your windows and wipe them down weekly
3. Buy pillow covers – they will keep out mites.
4. Buy a case to seal up your bed in. Get a case that can be wiped down
5. buy a non allergenic blanket
have a pair of comfortable clothes that you can put on as soon as you get home. before going into your room take a shower and put those clean clothes on. leave a hamper in the bathroom to store that days dirty clothes.
it will cost you money at first but the relief you get will pay for it in the end
Q: How can I stop cat allergy symptoms immediately?
I have asthma and I am also allergic to cats. I am staying at a friends house and she has two cats. When I was around them, I started reacting to them. I can’t stop sneezing and my nose won’t stop running. I also can’t stop coughing.
How can I fix this without any shots or taking any allergy medication?
A: Leave the premises and stay out.
Q: Childhood allergies and asthma. symptoms.?
I have a 3 year old grandson. Who diagnosed with allergies and asthma when he was 1 yr. old. It is very hard to decide if he has a bad cold or his allergies. But there is a lot of heavy yellow mucus and some bleeding from nose. Hard to breath. When he has a bad spell there can be upset stomach and vomiting. When there is vomiting there is a lot of heavy flem from the stomach. So I had a son that had this problem when he was young then he grew out of it at 2. So what do you think. My grandson has been on zytec also.
A: When my son has an attack he lets me know! He is usually wheezing and very cranky. He tells me he can’t breath and he needs a treatment. The mucus sounds like it may be something else. I think you need to ask a Dr to find out for sure but I don’t remember vomiting, mucus and nose bleeds as symptoms of asthma.
Q: how to improve asthma symptoms?
what can I do to improve asthma ?
I already take singulair, allergy meds, I already drink a lot of water, eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables, I already exercise quite a bit?
any ideas?
A: im classed as a chronic asthmatic, and there are several things you can do to help, as well as using your inhalers when needed try taking the odd antihistamine tablet before you go out in the morning, this helps to thin the mucus that is causing your airways to block, inhaling steam doesn’t work for me it makes my chest tighter, so i will use karvol tablets at night, also if your chest is bad due to a cold and you have more mucus than normal cut down on milk cheese chocolate as these are well know for thickening it up, lastly at night sleep with the window open slightly and use more pillows so you are more upright and insure you are taking all you preventatives properly, see your gp if your mucus is yellow or you are having bad chest pain as you may need a course of steroids, hope this helps
Q: Can a pregnant woman take Benadryl/antihistamine to treat an allergic reaction or help allergy induced asthma?
If she is already taking inhaled steroid inhalers, regular inhalers, etc., is there anything else a pregnant woman can take to help allergic asthma and allergic reactions in serious cases? Can she take a small dose of an antihistamine such as Benadryl to help her get relief from symptoms?
A: Yes, both my midwife and OB said it was okay.
Well along with the paramedics when I had an allergic reaction.
>.<
I have horrible asthma and used my inhaler only when necessary, probably 10-15 times total my entire pregnancy, same with benedryl.
I found vicks and a humidifier REALLY helped, especcially in the third trimester, and that way she doesn’t have to take medicine.
You can talk to your midwife/OB, but they will probably tell you to weigh the risks/benefits.
I know for me, the baby needs oxygen, and when I start to go into anaphlaxes I need to take benedryl.
Q: my doctor told me i had asthma what are the symptoms , but im pretty sure i dont have any allergies?
i also smoke ya i should quit easier said then done. what exactly is an asthma attack. i was also told 90% of people with asthma have allergies. i wont take inhalers because of all the side affects and im not sure if my doctor is right i dont have trouble breathing just a deep breath and sometimes wheezing but that can also be caused from smoking could somebody please tell me the symptoms
A: Asthma is simply bronchospasm and bronchoinflammation. These can be triggered by a number of things, including smoking. You don’t have to be allergic. If you get to the point where you are having asthma attacks, ie. wheezing and coughing, then if you don’t get treatment you will like die. Asthma kills many people every year.
Q: What would be some of the symptoms of asthma in a 8 year old boy?
He’s having headaches, trouble breathing, trouble sleeping, coughing at night. I have brought him to the doctor for this and he says its allergies and prescribed Zyrtec which didn’t help at all. What are the symptoms of asthma, especially in a child?
A: My nephew is 6 has asthma and my 2 year old, while too young to diagnose, is on a nebulizer with asthma medications. The symptoms my nephew show when he is having an attack or trouble, is a deep chesty cough, he complains of back pains, and has trouble breathing. His face flushes as well. Now my son it was just an incessant cough since birth. His pediatrician called it everything from a cold(that lasted 9 mo) to allergies, to me being paranoid. I could hear or feel his problems if I put my hand or ear to his back (right or left side). If you know it’s not allergies than you need to be your child’s best advocate and tell your doctor that it’s not allergies, and if he doesn’t believe you, ask for an allergen test. I switched pediatricians and she said his symptoms were valid and gave me his meds to see if they relieved his cough and sure enough they did.
Good luck to you.
Q: Does anyone have an infant with asthma? What are the symptoms to look for in an infant?
When did it first appear? My daughter is almost six months and has allergies. My dad had infantile asthma that disappeared after allergy shots, my husband had it pretty severe and it went away after dietery changes ten years ago. Sometimes she does this wierd thing where she almost seems like she is hyperventilating…she has only done it a few times. Twice after crying hysterically and once the other day when there was a very cold wind chill.
My husband and friend (who is almost finished with her nursing degree) witnessed it and thought do to the circumstances it was normal. When she was crying her nose was running alot and I could.t tell if she was having trouble breathing or if she was choking on her flem. My friend said, and mother agreed, that the cold wind is hard on their lungs, they aren’t used to it. (Now I make sure I cover her face up in the cold) I really want to know what other people’s experiences were so I know what to look for…and yes I will talk to the doctor.
A: It could just be her allergies acting up but heres a site about it..

Q: Can my allergy medicine cause “cotton mouth”?
I was taking Singular, Claritin & Benadryl without any problems. I have started taking Zyrtec since it is OTC instead of the Claritin. My allergy-induced asthma symptoms are much better but I seem to have “cotton mouth” and very dry lips now. Is this from the Zyrtec? Is it okay to combine all of these?
A: Yes allergy meds tend to give you dry mouth. You shouldn’t have to combine all of these and I wouldn’t do so. Your Dr. should be prescribing an appropriate medication for your asthma symptoms and your allergies.
