Q: what is the best over the counter asthma inhaler?
i have been taking proventil( albuteral sulfate inhalation aerosol) for my asthma, i got it a year and ago and got another bottle of it and the refills ended a week ago so i just to know if their are good over the counter inhalers i could use as a back up in case i need it

and for a side note, my asthma only gets bad this time of the year in spring, last spring i had a terrible asthma attack and had to be rushed to a hospital, but this is the first time since then i had to use my inhaler, but i’ll probably schedule a doctor visit and get another prescription because this stuff is pretty good,

A: There is an over the counter inhaler however, I wish it would be taken off the market. In my opinion, it is not safe.

If you are using your inhaler more then two times per week, your asthma is not in control. You will need a controller medication.

Albuteral should only be use for asthma attacks not as a preventative medication.

Q: Can I use over the counter asthma medication for exercise induced asthma?
I think I have exercise induced asthma but I don’t want to go to the doctor and I don’t have the money to go either. So I was wondering if I can just use an over the counter inhaler from walmart? Im 18!

A: You could try it and use it strictly according to the directions. Do not use it more often than directed.

Q: where can i get an over the counter inhaler for asthma?
my mom and i think i have exercise induced asthma
we don’t have insurance or enough money to take me to
the doctors
so i need to know if there is an over the counter inhaler?

A: Primatene Mist is over-the-counter, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Go to the doctor and get a prescription for Albuterol. Most pharmacies have the nebulizer formula for $4.

Q: Can I take Primatene Mist (over the counter asthma inhaler) while pregnant?
I have had asthma my whole life. Since I’ve been prego (5 months to date), my asthma has increased. My doc said that I need to keep my asthma under control while pregnant, and its better for the baby to take asthma meds as oppose to always be short of breath because if I am, oxygen will not get to the baby and there will be serious effects. So the doc had me on ProAir which is a safe inhaler for prego woman. Trouble is that my docs office is closed, I just ran out of my inhaler and I’m getting an attack right now. Should I just use the over the counter Primatene Mist? I don’t want to risk not getting enough oxygen to the baby. Please don’t say “ask your doctor” … that is an obvious one people. The doc office is closed an I need your advice. Gracias

A: Well, I searched it, and it says to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, so I would probably not take it unless your attack is severe.

Q: Best over the counter medication for asthma?
can i get any medication for asthma? i used to use inhaler, but i don’t have at anymore. and i dont wanan get prescription. so, does anyone know what is the strongest over the counter medication for the problem?

A: Allergy medications like Benadryl, Claritin, Chlor-Trimeton can be good to help reduce the severity of allergic asthma. If your asthma is bad enough that these don’t help you can get a Primatene myst inhaler. I would only use this as a last resort.

The best non medication treatment for asthma control is learning your asthma triggers and avoiding them. If you can not avoid your triggers, you will need prescription medications.

Just a note: The National Asthma Prevention Program and the Expert Panel of Diagnosis and Management of Asthma both agree if you have to use a prescription inhaler such as albuterol more then two time per week, your asthma is NOT in control and you will need a prescription controller medication.

Good luck.

Q: Asthma Over-The-Counter Medication and safe Workout?
What exercises are the least symptom triggering (I get out of breath and/or get spasms sometimes). Is yoga best?

Are there any over-the-counter Asthma medications I could buy in case I suffer an attack?

I don’t have medical insurance and have only needed to use an inhaler 5x in my life.

A: An exercise machine would be your best bet, or indoor usual exercise. Being outside would trigger it. Also the stores have primitine mist inhaler which prevents and helps with asthma symptoms.

Q: I get my asthma inhaler on prescription in the uk, can I buy something similar over the counter in the USA?
I’ll be working in the states for 6 months, wondered if I needed to bring supplies from the UK or if I could buy easily in the US. The inhaler is a blue Salamol CFC-free Inhaler/Reliever containing salbutamol sulphate.

A: only ones are primateen and can’t remember the other name. some areas remove the inhaler from the package cause kids were snorting them in the aisle. I don’t find them as effective as the ones requiring a presciption-bring a written presciption and bring plenty of inhalers -it is definitely more expensive here.

Q: where can i find an Asthma OTC inhaler?
Where can I find an Over the counter asthma medicine (preferably inhaler)..Not an inhaler for bronchial but one for actual asthma. Ive heard that there is one for OTC but i have no idea where to find it.

A: You might check with one of the larger drug chain locations like CVS or Walgreen.

But since the treatment of asthma requires medical oversite, you might have to go to the college health clinic or a public health location for a prescription.

Good luck.

Q: Do you know of any over-the-counter inhalers?
I don’t have asthma, but I have really bad seasonal allergies – lately, I’ve been wheezing like crazy, and I’d love something to help me – and if i can avoid going to the doctor, it would be great. I have used Albuterol before, and it works like a charm – but, obviously, it requires a prescription. Are there any OTC inhalers that I can get? I hear Primamist works, but then, somewhere else, I saw that there was a recall for it…help, please???

A: Primatine is the only over the counter inhaler but there is so little medication present in there, it may not do any good. Taking a daily allergy medication (such a Zyrtec, Alavert, Claritin) might be a better bet in getting this under control and running a humidifier in the bedroom where you sleep and increasing your daily water intake.

Q: What over-the-counter medication is there to help people who have slight asthma with allergies?
Sometimes I have slight asthma, but I believe that much of it is related to my allergy problem with mold, mildew, dust, weeds, etc. I have to take benadryl about everyday, and I sometimes get congestion in my sinuses and chest. Does decongestant help with preventing asthma at all? I have an inhaler available to take as needed, but don’t usually have very bad symptoms. It seems to come and go. Is this fairly normal?

A: It’s pretty normal for some people. Claritin helps me, but i take Singulair with it during harvest season, when my allergies get really bad. For a very, very mild asthma attack, coffee can sometimes help.

Check with your doctor before doing this, but my doctor said i could take 2 Claritin – 1 in the morning, 1 at night to help with allergies.

Q: is primatine mist over the counter safe?
i’ve had asthma since i was born, 32yrs male…i never heard of an over the counter inhaler. does this inhaler really work for severe asthma attacks? my albuterol inhaler wont be refilled till 7 days from now i would hate to go an ER, it costs 15k, did that last year. My luck, all my 10 years at my job had insurance never went to an ER, got layed off 7 months later bam…..

A: In an asthma class I took, the RN told us they are way less effective and have more side effects. I have severe asthma to the point I have been tubed for it and I would NEVER depend on something that was less effective to stop an attack.
For me I would bite the bullet and get a new inhaler through ER but sound like your really not wanting to do that so… I use the OTC if you have too but do try to get your asthma under better control, so that your not in this situation anymore because as anyone with severe asthma knows it’s scary and not fun to not be able to breath

Q: Is there over the counter flu/cough medication for asthmatics?
Thera flu makes an asthmatic an asshole is there any over the counter drugs that they can take for cold flu, that doesn’t work against their asthma inhaler and condition?

A: Ask the Pharmacist to recommend something.

Q: Is there such a thing as an over the counter inhaler?
For light asthma. If so, what is it called?

A: Primatene mist. I used it for years until my body grew an immunity to it. Now it doesn’t work anymore. Go to the Dr and they’ll more than likely get you a prescription for an albuterol inhaler that only costs like $13

Q: Asthma Inhalers?
Can I buy Becotide inhalers (the brown ones) over the counter in Australia?

A: hi . i would not think so as becotide is a steroid so you will need to see a doctor.. if you are not yet in australia your doctor will have to write a letter (for customs) explaining what medication you are taking and what they are prescribed for. so it would be an idea to get extra from the doctor here before you leave .

Q: Asthma Inhaler need help?
i havent officially gone and been officially dignosed but for now i’m going to use an over the counter inhaler. i dont have a clue about them. i used to have asthma but i was an infant so yea.

how do you use it. like how do you know how many times you need to press it and spray?

we think the breathing problems i have are excersised induced and i want to know should i use it before becoming active (running long walks ect…) or after??

i’m going to the doctors but for the time being i’m using the over the the counter one. i have an appointment but its not for a couple of weeks

A: ~Shake the inhaler before you use it.
~Then do a waste puff…. just gently press it and waste a puff
~Inhale air, then take the inhaler to your mouth and press down. Hold your breath for the recommended amount of time ( 5 sec) then exhale through the nose….

The OTC inhalers aren’t rescue inhalers, they are treatment inhalers…. don’t take more then the recommended amount.
Take it before you begin exercise.
