Q: in a child with asthma (coughing fits from bronchitis) would it be good or bad to serve hot ramen soup or some
thing cold like a PB&J sandwich. I have never dealt with this type of asthma symptoms before and not sure what would be the best or what would be harmful…he is on medication and treatments for the coughing.
A: My son had asthma when he was tiny. I would shut bathroom door, run a hot bath with menthol oil in it eg eucalyptus oil and steam up the room. I would not take him outside. I am sorry i cant help more but as for the food, give him what he fancies, soup should be fine. best wishes x
Q: Nighttime Cough and Asthma in Children?
My 6 yr old son had walking pnuemonia when he was 4 yrs for 3 1/2 months. After this, he developed asthma. He has allergies and was on clariton before it was OTC. Now he is on xopenex and pulimcort as needed and Singulair 5mg every night before bed. In the last couple of months, i have noticed that he is coughing a considerable amount in his sleep and looks tired in the morning. We are a non smoking family with dogs that are NOT allowed in the bedrooms. All the pillows and mattresses have the allergen covers, and we have hardwood floors that are swept at least once a day. I am concerned about his cough as it is worsening over time and wondered if this was a sign that his asthma is becoming worse. We have a doc appt with his ped next week, but wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. Only serious answers please. Thanks in advance.
A: I have had asthma since I was 5 also was diagnosed after having pneumonia. Coughing at night is not unusual but is concerning. I would diffidently talk to his doctor about this. The questions that come to my mind are, is he wheezing at night also? and when he coughs does he cough stuff up or is it dry. He could have something as simple as a cold. everything drains to the stomach and lungs and at night it just sits there. Try having him sleep propped up , rather than lying flat this sometimes helps. Try using Vicks Vapor rub this is great stuff. If he is coughing stuff up, I would use something with (Guaifenesin) in it during the day, this will loosen stuff up. Talk to your doctor about a cough syrup for night time. My daughter is also 6 and is just getting over the flu, she was coughing constantly at night and was giving a prescription cough syrup at night. She now sleeps all night. I hope this helps, Good luck.
Q: What are other reasons for a child frequently coughing besides asthma? can it be normal?
A: It could be allergies. Post-nasal drip can cause frequent coughing.
It could also be mold in your house/at daycare/at school.
It could also be cystic fibrosis.
It could just be a lingering cough from a virus (cold) they caught earlier. A cough from a cold can sometimes last weeks.
It could be pneumonia.
Any of these would have to be diagnosed by a doctor, but those are just a few things it could possibly be.
Q: What are the symptoms of asthma in children 12-15?
I have a family history of asthma: My dad, his dad and my pap. I have difficulty breathing and exercising and I sometimes cough a wheezing cough. Do I have asthma?
A: Sounds like you could possibly have Asthma also. I would recommend going to see a Doctor for that.
Asthma symptoms are pretty much what you have described (wheezing, shortness of breath, prolonged expiration and an irritated cough). The chances of developing Asthma can be increased if someone in your family has it already. This was the case for me where my father and his 2 brothers all had it, so i also then suffered from Asthma.
My parents were reluctant to put me on regular drugs from such a young age (12 years) so instead they looked at natural ways to reduce the symptoms and attacks. Basicly i was advised by a natropath that there were certain natural chemicals in foods that would reduce inflammation within the body and that changing my diet to include more of these chemicals could help, it did. By eating certain fruits and vegetables as my regular diet greatly reduced the attacks i had. It went from having an attack every 2 weeks to once every 12 months. It took a few weeks for me to notice the changes however once i did i never looked back. I still carried my inhaler everywhere with me however i was able to exercise, surf (asthma attacks while in the surf are terrifying) and do all the other things i loved without worring so much.
Obviously i would see a doctor however i would also look at your diet to see if there are other preventative things that can be done for little or no extra cost.
I just found this that may be of interest. It has a full 60 day money back guarantee and is not expensive anyway. It is not the same book that i had as a child however it sounds very similar.

Q: What expectorant is good to release phlegm in asthmatic children?
Apart fro the usual preventer and bronchodilator to treat asthma coughing in my child of 7 years I was told I can give an expectorant to help to get rid of phlegm in the airways which one is good? Thanks for answer
A: Robitussin expectorant works great. Mucinex works great also, I just don’t know if your child is old enough to take it .
Q: Asthma: What are some ways to control a cough for a child with asthma?
My niece is staying with us and has asthma and has started coughing. It was a last minute decision and she didn’t have her inhaler with her. She’s sleeping and just starting to cough, but I don’t want to let that go because it could throw her into an attack.
A: This has happened to me as well. I have asthma and when I sleep over at someone’s house my lungs usually flair up. Its probably because of an alergin in the area. Is your niece sleeping on the floor or in a bed? If on the floor, it could be dust, and if in a bed, it could be that the bedding is feather. I would reccomend checking the bedding to see if it has feathers in it. Some other common triggers that could be causing the cough are pollen, cat or other animal dander, dust mites, or mildew/mold. If you can find the trigger and remove it, you should be good to go.
Q: why do people suffer from broncho and asthma problems though they are taken proper care and treatment?
some children suffer from severe cough, asthma and broncho problems though they are given proper treatment and care.Other than heriditary can u give any reason?
A: Allergies….we all have em. Some people are sensitive to dust particulate matter because their nerves and their lungs are geared that way. These are generally your sensitive people and they get sick more often than many other people. If the air has a high dust content, they suffer from limited breathing and can have breathing attacks. Treatment for asthma is probably drugs. That won’t help purify their breathing air and that is what they need.
Healing be unto you and yours and me and mine

Q: How effective is homeopathy for curing child asthma?
My daughter is 5 years old and sometimes she has minor attacks of coughing due to asthma. Can homeopathy cure her completely?
A: No. Asthma is a lung disease that is misunderstood and irreversible. You never outgrow asthma. You may go through periods of your life asymtomatic, but it will resurface. The best method is to learn how to manage the disease through education. Visit your local lung organizations. Learn about environmental issues and how they affect you at home and in the air you breath in your area. Visit my website as a valuable resource in locating valid agencies and organizations that can get you and keep you on the right track. I also have a game page for kids to help them learn about asthma. Its at Your Asthma World.com (Yahoo) or get there from the “What’s your source?” feed.

Q: My children have been fighting with sinus infections, coughing, runny nose since birth no-one No’s the cause?
already taken singular, breathing treatments, nazonex, saline, cough syrup, benedryl-just about every medicine you could think of. They’ve been to nose-throat and ear specialist same results. I feel no-one is hearing my cry and my children are suffering PLEASE SOMEONE HELP. I only have medicade insurance. My 1 year old has had 3 ear infections and amonia this month alone. all 3 has been diagnosed with asthma but I’m telling you there is something else wrong I just do not know what.My 1 year old don’t even know how to breathe out of her nose because it’s been clogged for so long.
A: Honestly I feel our air has changed, I just turned 40 in December and never in my life did I ever experience sinus problems outside of a cold. But ironically after 911 happened, about 2 yrs later me, my husband and now my 72 yr old father all suffer with sinus problems and some sort of allergy. My father was given an inhaler 2 yrs ago because it was so bad that when he would lay down, he couldn’t breath- I insisted he tell the doctor to get and ex ray because at one point he had bronchitis and even after that he had a bad dry cough- after having the x-ray they found fluid in his lungs, draining a quart and a half out. Sounds gross I know!!
But his doc told him that for some reason more and more people are coming in with allergies and sinus troubles, that something must have changed in the air.
I believe this is true given that I was never one to ever have any problems, but now as soon as the summer comes to a close, my sinus start to act up- right through to winter then they get better until Spring, that is when it starts up again.
This doesn’t help you I am sure, but there isn’t a cure for what we are enduring. Only meds to help us through them. You might want to get a humidifier, and maybe even an air purifier for the hallway where the kids sleep. And change the air filter in your heater every 6 months, this will help some too.
Did you hear about the mediorite that came down in peru?
Sickened hundreds of people who went to the site, upper respitory issues, nausea and congestion… makes you stop and think what is really going on with the world these days- more and more illnesses are popping up, and allergy cases in those who never before had them.
Ask the doc about an inhaler if it is safe for the kids to use, if need be find another doc who takes your medicaid and get a second opinion possibly another doctor will have a more effective solution.
Good luck- I know how stressed you must feel and at your wits end with this- wish I could be of more help.
Q: What is Asthmatic Bronchitis in Children?
Can you explain to me further pls. Is Asthmatic Bronchitis in Children is more on Asthma? or Coughing?
A 1 year old patient who always cough, and was diagnosed to have an Asthmatic Bronchitis.
A: It’s another name for asthma. Asthma is an allergic reaction to a trigger. A trigger can be dust, pet hair/dander, dust mites, mold / mildew, smoke or any other smell or substance that causes the allergic response.
If you can identify the trigger, you can avoid it. This should make symptoms go away.
Some with asthma wheeze, some cough, most have shortness of breath. Signs and symptoms can very.
Good luck.
Q: how do I get my child to stop coughing at night due to asthma?
A: Does he have an inhaler and nebulizer?
My son was falsely diagnosed with asthma when he had a cough that took months to go away, so please be sure it’s asthma and treat it accordingly if it is.
Q: asked earlier, but need more advice about asthma in children, help please?
My baby is 7 months old with asthma or something like it (too young to tell, but I want to know if I should buy a cool mist humidifier to help him breath at night, cause he always wakes up coughing weather I do the nebulizer before bed or not. We use the nebulizer cause he always coughing, and there is a rattle in his chest, and he is always congested too. Will this help him? Also, what store can I get a small, cute, and inexpensive one for him? AND one more thing, If you have an experience with asthmatic children, can you give me ideas, clues, or any type of advice for me to help him or understand what is going on with him and stuff, cause I am not sure about it since I never experienced this with anyone or myself?
A: starfire is right on the money with her answer.
My daughter is 5 now and has had asthma since she was about 1 year old.
I find too much dairy and any type of virus (colds, runny nose etcc..) are her triggers. Try switching formula to soy or lactose free or if your are breastfeeding do the same for yourself. Including yoghurts and cheese etc..
I still can’t detect when my daughter has this ‘wheeze’ they always talk about but the BIG things to look for with asthma are,
the little dip in their throat/neck being sucked tightly in when they breathe, its called having a ‘tug’ in the throat and
when they breathe they will have a distinct ’suck in’ at the base of their ribs/stomach region on each side. It really gets sucked in with each breath they take. Also the cough will be very dry and sharp at first. After nebulising or inhalers it can change to a wet cough as the mucus is released.
If they aren’t displaying these signs of breathing distress then it is most likely NOT asthma. However if he is still coughing a lot and its a very wet, phlegmy cough keep him raised up higher with thick pillows or by raising the cot matress itself up. ( to stop the mucus piling up) He probably has some sort of bronchial infection and should be checked out by a doctor to rule out Bronchitas, RSV, pnuemonia and many other viruses.
If he is showing signs of breathing distress and has the very sharp dry cough take him to the hospital or doctors asap. Asthma is very very serious and should always be treated as such. If he is needing an inhaler or nebuliser more than every 3 hours or if the medication is giving little or no relief antime then take him straight away too.
My daughter was in hospital for 3 days, 4 weeks ago with a severe attack and its really scary and not to be taken lightly.
At 7mths your son is far too young to actually test for asthma yet but take him to a specialist pediatrian or your family doctor at least, as soon as possible to get him checked to see if he needs inhalers (taken through a spacer) or other decongestant medication.
Best of luck and speak to your doctor about any questions you have. Its been 4 years since my daughter first started with it and I am still learning things all the time! Australian Asthma Foundation website has some great information as well.

Q: what cause a very dry cough in children and what should i do for it and she has asthma?
A: Try an OTC cough med. If that does not help, than it is her asthma, call her physician. My child’s asthma doc tells me to double their steroid inhalant when they get the dry hacking cough and it helps.
Q: Do children get puffy face or become fat, by using the brown inhaler for the control of their asthma?
My child of almost of 7 years has been puffing the brown inhaler for 3 years. she takes Pulmicort 50 mg twice a day, more if she’s having a cough. I do wonder if she may get a puffy face or become fat in the future because of the amount of steroids. My Doctor says, no, but a friend of mine swears that her daughter got full moon face by using the steroids for control of asthma. Thanks for your answer. Big regard.
A: No, It helps them clear there lungs. Why would you think this?
Q: Asthma in children?
My son has asthma, which usually only appears when he has a cold.
For the past couple of weeks he’s had a permanently blocked nose and a frequent cough. But I’m confused – I thought asthma was usually accompanied by a dry cough, whereas his is quite “phlegmy” – when he wakes up coughing, it seems like he has to clear his pipes and then he can go back to sleep.
What are other people’s experiences. I’d just like to understand this condition better.
(And please don’t tell me to see the doctor, as obviously we already have).
He was checked by a hospital doctor a few days ago for signs of infection, and his lungs were completely clear. So that’s not the problem.
A: It’s not always a dry cough, as the production of mucus is one of the things that happens when Asthma is triggered. It really sounds like he has Bronchitis right now, my daughter and I both end up with it after a cold. Basically it’s a chest cold and not much can be do for it. However my daughter has developed pneumonia twice, so be vigilant and if you feel as if something is wrong, don’t let yourself be put off. One time I didn’t give up on getting a diagnosis for her, and they took a chest x-ray, and sure enough, she had pneumonia. We caught it really early, but wouldn’t have if I hadn’t insisted they take care of her problem. Is your son also being treated for allergies? They often accompany asthma and could be what is causing the blocked nose and phlegmy cough. And allergies aren’t just during one time of the year, some people have year round allergies, and some people have them worse in the Fall.
