Q: Anyone go to an allergy & asthma clinic?
I have asthma and have been getting treated by my family dr. I tell him its not under control having to use my rescue inhaler many times a day it just seems to be getting worse at times. Some days its so bad I can sleep cause all the coughing and mucus in my lungs.Iam alos scared cause they are removing the old inhalers off the market come end of this year and the new ones dont seem to work well.Iam on singulair which does help some.

I made an appt. at a asthma and allergy clinic has anyone ever went to one of these and have sucess and free from daily attacks.I cant go on like this. Is this better than seeing my normal doctor for my asthma?? anyone with experience please any advice

A: yes i have been going virtually all my life

dont worry – it will be easily controlled with the correct inhalers
i take a beclazone (preventer) and a salbutalmol (reliever) twice a day and it is perfectly under control. i very rarelyneed to take them any other times, its normally fine

Q: My daughter has been diagnosed with asthma?
She will be 3 years old in March.

She goes to asthma clinic once a month and is on 2 different inhalers.

I wondered if anyone has any suggestions on what would be best for her?

Anti allergy pillows?
Laminate floor in her bedroom?

Is there anything special that needs to be done to make life easier for her?

A: Do what you can to reduce dust levels but do not go overboard because she will naturally build-up resistance to many things as she grows-up. Laminate flooring will help if it is vacuumed/dusted regularly, with bedding anti-allergy stuff is ok but ordinary polyester fibre materials are good too as long as they are fully aired and vacuumed along with the mattress every month or so.
As a long term sufferer of asthma I would advise you to treat this like you would any minor incapacity – you need to let your child learn to live with the asthma and not feel like she is a weak and feeble because of it. Remember there are professional footballers who have this ailment so as long as she does not develop a chronic condition she will be fine. Just treat it as something that needs to be monitored and teach her to keep away from those things that aggravate her condition.

Q: in a job interview, how do i answer this?
im a medical assistant recently graduated.
i have two interviews tomorrow,
one at a family practice clinic and one
at an asthma and allergy specialty clinic.
i had an interview at an ob/gyn clinic last week,
i feel i didnt do as good as i usual do.

my problem is seeming interested in that specialty.
i had an externship at a pediatrics clinic and i LOVED it,
and thats where i would like to work, but no pediatrics
have openings right now and i need to work.

does anyone have any suggestions about how i should answer
“so what made you want to work here?” about an asthma and allergy
clinic???? i have neither and have never experienced them with anyone closely. im an excellent worker and do my best no matter what type of clinic im in. but what should i say when they ask that question???

at the ob/gyn interview, i has trouble coming up with an answer that wasnt too general. i would have rather faked one but didnt come up with it quick enough…….

so what can i say about wanting to work at a family practice OR an allergy/asthma clinic????

please help :) and wish me luck!

A: TELL THE TRUTH.

Q: Concerns about taking symbicort (any symbicort users?)?
My asthma is not been very well controlled and my dr didnt seem to be doing much.So I went to an Asthma & Allergy clinic today they tested me for allergies and I found out Iam allergic to all types of grass most trees, cats, dogs, dust mites etc…. yeah like everything it seems.

Well one of the drugs she want to put me on is symbicort but when i looked at the insert i was shocked I think (possible death) is mentioned like at least 5 tiimes. So iam a little freaked out I must say

A: Symbicort is two drugs ….. consisting of Budesonide, which is a steroid that reduces inflammation in the body….. secondly …

Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways to improve breathing.

Symbicort is used to prevent bronchospasm in people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Most issues related to death are from the long-acting bronchodilator … and most deaths related to this have been in the African-American patient population that of which is poorly understood …..

Q: Could I suddenly develop asthma after 43 years?
Recently in the allergy clinic, I overheard a woman say that she had trouble breathing at night on the two days that I could not go anywhere because my chest felt heavy; I had no energy. These two days we had above normal temps and I figured it was from heart disease, which I have.
However, on the same day I was in the clinic, I had an allergic reaction and had to go to the ER. There, a doctor listened to my lungs and asked if I always have the wheezing? I said no. It was only in one spot where he placed the stethoscope in my upper left side of my back when I exhaled. I was soon discharged, so I don’t what the wheezing was from the allergic reaction or maybe something else.

A: My husband gets seasonal asthma, so I guess anything is possible these days. It all depends on what we are exposed to on a daily basis. Your wheezing could very well have been related to the allergic reaction you had.
I wouldnt look too deeply into it unless it happens often and the problem persists. Then I neednt state the obvious, but I’d go see the GP.
Good luck hun.

Q: Breast feeding, immunizations, allergy shots, and illness….?
Just curious.

I am getting a cold or something (sore throat, runny nose). It’s still okay to breast feed right???

This Thursday is the drive through flu shot clinic and I a plan on getting one since I have severe asthma. It’s for the regular stain of flu. Is this okay while breastfeeding? Would it protect my nursing daughter from the flu as well?

What about the H1N1 Vaccine? It’s too new and kind of scares me….

Also are allergy shots okay to take? I am going to the dr today but was just wondering before I go…

A: Yes, it’s okay to breastfeed when you have a cold. Any antibodies that your body produces to fight the cold will actually go to your daughter in your milk, protecting her from the virus.

The flu vaccine should be fine to get while breastfeeding: http://kellymom.com/health/meds/vaccines-bf.html#flu

I don’t know about the H1N1 vaccine, but like you, the newness of it makes me more nervous about it. I prefer to wait until vaccines have been a little more time tested to see what kind of side effects they have. I know it’s been approved by the FDA, but new vaccines still make me nervous. I prefer to wait a little before considering them.

Allergy shots should be fine, too: http://kellymom.com/health/illness/mom-health-misc.html#allergyshot

Q: Daughter can’t receive the flu shot or nasal mist, does anyone know of any other options?
My daughter is 4 years old and has asthma and a moderate allergy to egg whites. Her primary care doctor says that she needs the flu shot because since her asthma is so bad if she gets the flu it could be very dangerous for her. However, since she has an allergy to eggs and the flu shot is derived from eggs, the allergy clinic says that she can’t receive the flu shot and that she would have to get the nasal mist. So then her doctor tells me that she can’t get the nasal mist because of her asthma.
I don’t know what to do. Has anyone been through a similar situation?

A: There is this pill your child can take. Idk if she can, but my cousin took it and she was fine. Check with your doctor first, because it does produce flu like symptoms.

Q: Sudden asthma in male after vaccinations – any research on this?
My boyfriend is 38. Before traveling to India, and while he was recovering/on the tail end of this years’ nasty 3-week cold, he visited a clinic who convinced him to take about 5 vaccinations… maybe more, but they included HepA, HepB, MMR, and Polio. His shoulder was obviously sore for a few days. About 2 weeks later it seemed his allergies really started to bother him… then we left on our trip. He seemed totally fine while in India. The moment we returned home his allergies worsened into Asthma – he is now on an inhaler and cough medication and the wheezing and coughing, which originally seemed to be maybe cat-related as it was worse in our house, now occurs all day, worsening towards end of day. I’ll not deny allergens in the house or in the air here in the US that are not present in India… but the severe and sudden reactions sure seem to coincide with the multiple vaccinations he received. Is there any research you can share? Internet search results are sketchy at best.

A: It might just be coincidence, or it could be that the immune stimulators in the vaccinations tipped his system into allergic overdrive.
Sorry I have no research, but it is well known that vaccinations contain substances that stimulate immune reactions. This helps the vaccination to work better.

Q: Creatine and asthma????????
Im looking for something to take to help me build muscle faster and everyone i talked to said take Creatine.. so i read some stuff about and i found…

“The Mayo Clinic states that creatine has been associated with asthmatic symptoms and warns against consumption by persons with known allergies.”

i have asthma should i not take it? will it rly make a difference?
or maybe anything else i can take to get stronger faster?

A: I would talk to your doc about that. But if your asthma is controlled I see no problem.
Here’s something to look at the effect strong onions have on asthma. A good effect symptoms and flare ups are reduced.

Q: does gluten & wheat free diets get rid of phlegm.?
for a few months now I have been coughing up clear phlegm… It started getting worse with bigger chunks coming up and a constant feeling of phlegm in my throat with my nose feeling constantly stuffy. I always feel like I have to cough every 2 seconds and blow my nose. I had some kinesiology allergy tests done and it showed up that I was sensitive to wheat , dairy products & potatos. I was advised to go on a wheat & gluten free diet and cut out the dairy & potatos all together. I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem with phlegm and this sort of diet helped to shift it? Also in the morning my chest feels congested when I first wake up. I have mild asthma but the doctor’s are persistant in saying that this is not asthma related. I have even been told to come off my inhalers by the asthma clinic but I cannot seem to manage it. Replies will be appreciated.
p.s I have been to different doctors had 3 courses of antibiotics and it did not lift. The phlegm is clear so it is not an infection.

A: I think you’ll find your diet will help. My thing was milk. When I quit it took a few weeks but it worked.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Q: really allergic to my BF’s family cat. he still lives with his parents…?
and he wont ask them to give it away or some other alternative (none of which involve harming the pet).
He wants me to feel comfortable at his house, but im severly allergiv. I take antihistamines and bring my inhaler.
It hurts my feelings that he and his family are thinking that whats the probelem with the cat, even though they know im allergic. Its in the house a good majority of the time, the dander is everywhere. I dont think its too dramatic to say that I feel crappy b/c a family pet of only a few months is trumping me, his girlfriend for over 5 years. Im not faking this, I actually had blood drawn when my asthma was getting worse, cats got a 5 or a 6 (cant remember) on their rating system (at the allergy clinic.

Just tell me what you think…
he comes over to my place, but would rather me over at his parents place.

its their right to own the pet, but at the expense of it being difficult for me to breathe.
it would be asking them not telling them.

A: My girlfriend had the same problem but hers was her best friend’s house and she get really sick whenever she went there, i believe you about that blood drawn, cats are really bad for some alergics (asthma and other…)

Q: I might have asthma?
I am 21 and have never had breathing problems more serious then mild allergies. About three weeks ago I had a pretty serious case of the flu, and developed a cough and wheeze around then. Flu is gone, cough and wheeze is not so I went to my colleges health clinic (the voodoo hut), and after a nurse practicioner listened to my chest I was told I have bronchial asthma and given a steroid inhaler and a breathing treatment.

First of all, do you think its asthman? Second, what doctor should I go to for follow up?

A: If I were you,I would go to your regular doctor and have him or her check you over very carefully! I don’t want to scare you,but I suffer from asthma myself, and you should always take the symptoms of asthma very seriously!! I have an asthma inhaler that I carry on me and I also wear a medical alert bracelet in case I have a severe asthma attack, the medical personnel can just check my medical alert bracelet and see that I am asthmatic! It seems to me that night time is the worst time for me,because even with an inhaler,I tend to cough alot at night! If your asthma is really severe, your doctor may prescribe a,”Nebulizer,”which is basically a breathing treatment that you inhale that has medicine in it and you breathe it in!

Your regular doctor will not only want to listen to your lungs, but he or she will probably be asking you alot of questions about your breathing, what symptoms you had, etc…. If your doctor says that you have to take medicine,PLEASE TAKE YOUR MEDICINE THAT YOUR DOCTOR PRESCRIBES FOR YOU,IT IS CRUCIAL!! If your doctor thinks that your asthma is severe and they don’t have the expertise to deal with your asthma, they may send you to a specialist just for some tests to see how bad your asthma really is!

One of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS that you can do is to stay away from people who smoke cigarettes, because that really can irritate your bronchial tubes and cause you to really start coughing uncontrollably! I would set up an appointment with your doctor, and have him or her check you over very thoroughly!! I am sending lots of ((((HUGS and PRAYERS YOUR WAY))))) Good Luck!! ;-)

Q: Why do I have pleurisy?
I went to a health clinic today and was told that I have pleurisy. The doctor said that it often develops in people my age (I’m 27), people who have asthma, and people who have allergies. However, I’m looking up causes of pleurisy and the causes listed are much worse. Do you think it was just the asthma/allergies? Have you ever had pleurisy?
I don’t smoke though.
All the causes are serious: cancer, pneumonia, chest trauma, exposure to asbestos, etc. – I don’t think I have any of that!

A: Pleurisy is swelling (inflammation) of the thin layers of tissue (better know as the pleura).
It’s basically summarised as being a secondary infection from having viral or bacterial infection.
You will be okay. Maybe you have had something you haven’t noticed b4 cos I know my son has tonsillitis that went unknown until his asthma flared up so bad.
Just take your antibiotics and you should be all alright within a week or two!
PS… It’s not that is is common for “27 yr ODs” to be susceptible for it. The aged are more susceptible cos of their low immunity and they tend to catch pneumonia easier.

Q: acupuncture?
i have chronic daily headache, migraines, severe allergies, asthma, and [very severe] acid reflux. i also have a very weak immune system since i got mono at a young age. [no not from kissing] my parents are all about me getting acupuncture because my neurologist says that i’m not responding even to pain medication [for headaches] but i’m not so sure about some dude sticking a bunch of needles in my body!!!!! i have seen it done before.. but it was to a dog and they weren’t very fond of being held down, i know that’s different.. but STILL! i dont understand how needles on my body’s pressure points will help! there are other options that i can try but my parents are so keen on acupuncture! [i'm going to be doing biofeedback and a pain clinic] i also know that acupuncture has worked multiple times for many people but hasnt worked enough to be considered a real medical treatment… but i guess what i’m asking for here is comfort?

A: Danielle :],

Acupuncture theory in a picture – It is theorized that the living body is permeated by a vital energy that Chinese medicine identifies as qi. It is very much like an ocean within all parts of the body. Acupuncture meridians are the currents in the ocean that move it, and circulate it. The points that are punctured are areas where the currents come close to the skin’s surface and offer us places were the current can be adjusted and altered. Think about the El Nino effect from a few years ago, when changes in the ocean currents effected weather patterns. Changes in the currents have an systemic effect of the whole ocean, thereby effecting the whole body.

For the most part, Acupuncture in the United States is very gentle. The needles are a mere fraction of the thickness you find in a syringe because acupuncture needles are solid as opposed to hollowed out injection needles.

Acupuncture is considered to be a real medical therapy, and there are literally hundreds of years of observational data to support acupuncture’s effectiveness. Aside from rare and minor bruising, it has almost zero negative side-effects when practiced by a trained professional.

Finally, look at it this way. Standard care isn’t working as well as you would like. At its very least usage, Acupuncture is a very nice complementary system of pain relief and management. What is freedom from pain worth to you?

Q: Why is my Siamese Kitten Coughing?
I just became a owner of a 5 month old siamese kitten…but on the day we got him he was sneezing ,coughing and had flees (we got him from a respectable breeder and met in her vet clinic which is where he got the flees). Week two we went to the vet and got antibiotics, now its week 3 and he is still coughing (he gets on his four feet stretches his neck and starts coughing for a couple seconds. Usually in the morning when he starts purring, and whenever he has been quiet for a while and then starts purring or meowing) he eats well, plays, and a normal happy kitten but still coughing and we still do not know what is wrong…soon we will have to go to the vet for the 3ed time. Could it be allergies, asthma, or something else…?

A: Hi Sarah,

It sounds like your kitten is still dealing with an upper respiratory infection. It could be viral, so antibiotics will not work on a virus. The chronic cough can be caused by a wide variety of conditions.

Your kitty could also have feline asthma, heartworm, lung worm, or other conditions that are causing a chronic cough. Here is an excellent article about coughing in a feline that may be of help to you.

http://www.vetinfo.com/ccough.html

By the way, a “respectable” breeder would not let a kitten go to a new home with those symptoms.that you describe. Having bred Siamese for many years as a reputable CFA registered breeder, that would be the last thing I would do. I would only let perfectly healthy kittens who had been vet checked and vaccinated go to new homes.

It is really important to get your kitten back to the vet for a thorough examination, which may include x-rays and blood tests to get to the bottom of what is affecting your kitten.

I wish you all the best. Siamese are just amazing cats, aren’t they?
