Q: What food have to take for allergic asthma?
I have allergic asthma from my childhood itself. Now I am 25. Every doctor said that you should take a life long treatment. I belongs to a middle class family. I dont have to money to buy all the medicines. So I decided to take treatment in my Home itself. Anybody tell me the treatment for allergic asthma.

A: Have you ever been tested for allergies? The majority of the time, allergic asthma is related to environmental allergies (animals, dust mites, grass,…). Rarely (1-2% of the time) is asthma related to foods.

So, the first step is to identify what your triggers are. Once you know what they are, you can avoid them much more easily. I thus recommend you see a board certified allergist for an evaluation. Medical insurance will pay for most, if not all, of the visit.

Q: Are there any allergy treatments for people allergic to cats?
When I am around my girlfriend’s cat, I get severe asthma, are there shots that can cure this or control the reaction?

A: I get the same reaction when I’m around cats. There are treatments that can make it less severe, but there’s no way to “cure” your allergies. See an allergist. They will more than likely prescribe a daily antihistamine (i.e., Zyrtec, Allegra, Clarinex) and a nose spray (Flonase, Rhinocort, Nasonex). Also, there are things that help keep asthma symptoms under control in addition to your inhaler, such as Pulmicort and Advair. Allergy shots can help decrease your sensitivity, but that takes time. Good luck…and have her come over to see you. Asthma can kill you, dude.

Q: Current Asthma Treatment makes asthma worse?
The current treatment paradigm for allergic asthma involves the use of corticosteroids and beta-adrenergic agonists such as albuterol. Explain why this treatment method may actually be making this disease worse.

A: Any drug that is constantly used , stops working.Then the medication has to be changed and or dose increased. At last, a stage comes when all drugs in maximum doses become ineffective. But Asthma stays.

Q: My boyfriend is having what seems to be a mod.-severe allergic asthma attack and nothing is helping!!!?
He’s been very wheezy since Friday, the albuterol inhaler and nebulizer treatments only stop the wheezing for maybe a max of an hour. and the time seems to be shorter and shorter. he did 3 nebs and 2 inhaler puffs through out the day. I’m afraid for him to use too much albuterol and it might have opposite effects and close him up even worse. this is the time of year where it gets really bad and we need to go to the ER is there anything I can do to help him breathe easier all i know is albuterol and it isn’t helping!! I tried making Sage Tea earlier didn’t seem to help too much either. Please any advice would be great.

A: Any medical doctor should be able to help your mother with her asthma. The important thing to know about asthma is that it is triggered by something. If you know what that something is, you can avoid it and not have asthma attacks.

Q: Anyone know what an “allergic reaction” to flea treatment can entail?
I adopted my cat from a shelter 3 months ago and 2 months after adopting her she became very ill. She started coughing, and had rapid and labored breathing. The vet has no idea what is wrong with her. She spent a night getting a Depo shot and oxygen and started her on treatment for Lungworm and asthma.

While still treating her, she became sick again with similar symptoms, and was hospitalized with oxygen for another night. We increased the medications for both Asthma and Lungworm.

I marked on a calendar all of her symptoms, moods, appetite and medications to see if there is any combining factor. What do you know, a day or two before each sickness I gave her advantage flea treatment. I am definitely stopping treatment, but I wonder if this could be the cause. I couldn’t find much information on the web.

This could be entirely coincidence, but has anyone experienced an allergic reaction to flea treatment which includes respiratory distress?
I called Bayer Pet parents and sort of received an answer. Most allergic reactions cause rash, fur loss, foaming at the mouth and vomiting. While the person I spoke with has never personally heard of respiratory reactions, she said it wasn’t entirely impossible. She advised to stop using Advantage and to see if that helps. She also said if the vet and I do determine it definitely was the Advantage, she would like me to call back and it can be officially documented. She also said if my cat had any unknown respiratory illness at the time, the chemicals could have enhanced any sysmptoms.

While also searching the internet I found Advantage Multi lab results for overdosing cats and finding the maximum amount before illness occurs. Respiratory symptoms similar to that of my cat’s were found when over 3 times the amount of medicine was given.

I just thought I should update, that it could be that my cats was overly sensitive to this product, but it could still be something else.

A: Sounds right my tom had a similar reaction and went into kidney failure. He was running a high fever and the vet recommended a cool bath. After the bath he improved dramatically and then it hit us, flea repellent. I gave him a good soapy bath and he was up and running in 24 hours but the damage had been done. He was almost blind and had permanent kidney damage. I read every pesticide I put on my cats now as this kidney damage finally killed him when I fed him the poisoned wet cat food in 2007. I still miss him.

Q: For anyone who knows anything about asthma?
My son has be recently diganosed with allergy induced asthma. I give him his meds every night ( singular, claritian, nasonex pulmicort) and then it flairs up zopanex. My question is he just had bhronchitis in november. Here it is mid december and I noticed a cough again. Last January he had to be hospilized for it. I am giving him his meds like clockwork. Never misses a dose but he keeps getting sick. Is that normal for a kid with alleregy induced asthma ( he is allergic to dust mites and mold) . He does not act like he feels bad but that cough concerns me. I take him to the doctor ( might as well go on and move in) he has missed over a week of school so far. Does it get better as he gets older? Does he need more aggressive treatment? Or is this just part of having an asthmatic child????

A: Unfortunately it can be part of having an asthmatic child. My 7 yr old daughter has asthma and is allergic to dustmites. She takes Singulair, Advair and an Albuterol inhaler when needed. She often coughs. But she is still very active (plays soccer). There is a place online called “National Allergy” , they sell items at reasonable costs that reduce dustmites. Get Dustmitex and add it to water to clean your carpets. There is also an item called De-mite, you put it in your laundry to remove dustmites. Sometimes a cool mist humidifier in the bedroom helps (not always, allergists have different opinions on that.) When the coughing flares up, cool caffeinated drinks help. It is frustrating and difficult sometimes, but remember , when he goes to school he will be exposed to sick kids which aggravates the asthma, it can’t be helped sometimes. Q: what are the treatment options for Low back pain?
I am diagonised with Low Back Pain about 5 months back. I am taking pain releiving tablets and gel for local aplication apart from LS Belt. After 3 months of wearing the belt, my doctor advised me to discard the LS belt and practice physiotherapy. But without belt, if I bent or lift moderatly heavy articles, I get pain in the lower back. I want to know what are the other treatment options? In future, if it is not diminished, will I need to undergo surgery? I used to ride two wheeler by wearing the belt. My job is office job, computer related, full time. I have got other diseases like Depression, Anxiety,Hypercholestrolemia, Asthma, Allergic Rhinitis and GH.
Will any doctors or experienced patients may answer my question.?

A: First of all, if you fel better with the belt, then wear it.

Second, there are exercises that your doctor should have informed you about which will strengthen your lower back and help relieve pain. These exercises do help. You must be vigilant in doing them at least twice a day – morning and night.

Third, and VERY important – how you sit at your office job affects your lower back. You may need to buy a lower back support cushion, OR a back support system office chair.

Q: Can someone help me cure this persistent dry cough?
I am 16 years old, I have asthma, and im basically allergic to everything under the sun. About a week ago I developed a cough, it started out as a sore throat, and escalated into a horrible dry cough. My throat itches to such an unbearable point that I have to cough. I first thought it was because of my asthma, but my lungs are fine. My doctor told me my chest is not congested either. I can take long deep breathes with out even a slight wheeze and still have coughing fits that can last up to a couple minutes of just constant coughing to the point that I gag. I then thought it was my allergies causing the problem. My doctor perscribed me nasonex and it has done nothing. I have tried every cough syrup available, drinking fluids, coughdrops, nasonex as i said, as well as benadryl, and reactin. I have tried all of the asthma treatments I own; symbacourt, ventolin, nothing works. My dad went online and saw codine worked for some coughs, so i tried it, it didnt work. This cough is unbearable. Last night was the first night I have slept for more than one and a half hours for a week. I got a full night’s sleep last night after sitting in bed for 4 hours hacking away. I dont even know how I slept, it beats me. I think that when I am unconsious I dont feel the tickling sensation in my throat so I dont cough…. thats my guess. I had the same thing I have now a year ago ( also making me think it was from seasonable allergies), but it was even more violent. I would cough to the point of vomiting, luckily it hasnt happend this time…. but does this sound familiar to anyone? can someone help me out here?

A: You have tried everything that I would have suggested except calling your doctor back so he might refer you to a pulmonologist.
It also sounds as if you might not have given each thing a chance to work. Some of those things take days to have a full effect. The doctor might also prescribe prednisone. A steroid which should reduce the inflammation. You’ve tried all the cough suppressants except you don’t mention dextromethoraphan (DM). Robitussin and Mucinex both have this form.
Also, you don’t mention anything like Singular or Claritin, both help allergies. And since it’s seasonal this is a very likely cause. You mentioned benadryl but that’s not always effective.
You also said you tried hydration. This is a very important thing. 6-8 glasses of water a day might mitigate the cough also.

Q: is there any alternative remedies for asthma?
I’m off work because i have a chest infection, and my asthma is making it really hard work to breathe.

I’ve had asthma for the past 3 years and have red and green inhalers plus my reliever.

tbh I’m sure my asthma was never this bad before I started using the preventative inhalers. I thought I was doing ok with just my reliever but the nurse insisted that I started using the other two. I was warned before I started taking the preventative ones that if I stopped using them that I would cause damage to my lungs.

At the beginning my asthma was just an allergic reaction to hay, now its a full time condition.

I’ve heard about salt pipes etc. Would they be good for my asthma? If possible, I’d like to find a treatment I could use instead of the preventative inhalers (I don’t like the thought of being on them forever) but I’d never throw my reliever away…just in case.

A: That would be a resounding no. Although asthma is a very common chronic illness, it can be fatal. Altmed has nothing to offer. Under no circumstances must you stop taking your asthma medication and pursue activities like AltMed, that have never been demonstrated to work or alter the course of any disease.

Now, 85% of chesty episodes are the result of viral infections and viral infections can make asthma symptoms worse. Viral infections are one of my triggers, I recently had a flare up myself.

The red and green inhaler you are taking are an ICS and LABA, sometimes despite taking preventative inhalers, viral infections can cause problems and you will require a SHORT course of prednisolone (which generally will not cause any side effects). This will increase lung stability and reduce the inflammation. You need to get the Pred. from your GP on Rx. See your Doctor, do not play around with asthma.

Is your asthma regularly monitored? You need to monitor your PF b.d.

Salt pipes will not help asthma. You need to accept that there is no cure for asthma, but taking preventative inhaled medication will prevent symptoms the vast majority of the time. Noxious viral infections can sometimes cause problems which is when Pred is indicated.

Its vital you attend regular asthma reviews and monitor your PF at home, a decline in PF or frequent use of your short acting inhaler (Ventolin, etc) can be an indication that your asthma is not under control and it may mean that your asthma medication needs adjusting. It sounds like your medication may need adjusting if you are noticing your asthma is worse in general.

You might also try the add on Singulair (leukotriene receptor antagonist), it does have a 20% failure rate (in fact I would put the failure rate higher than that) but when it works, its brilliant.

It’s tempting to stop taking your other two preventative medication, but if you do this and just rely on your short acting inhaler (Ventolin, etc) you will be at an increased risk of serve attacks, which can of course be fatal. The ICS (red inhaler) reduces inflammation in the lungs but it needs to be taken continuously to be effective.

I am a horsy person too, unfortunately, horses and hay can make asthma worse. This is allergic asthma, a different pathway and can be problematic. Have a chat with your GP about your over all management.

Q: Is it dangerous to leave mild asthma undiagnosed?
Someone recently told me I might have mild asthma, which is something I’d never really thought of before, but it makes a lot of sense.

During childhood, I used to get bad coughs and chest infections every winter, and because my parents didn’t “believe” in modern medicine (I know, they were very silly and irresponsible), I was never taken to a proper doctor about this and I was given various homeopathic treatments, which never worked at all.

The severity has got less as I’ve grown up (I’m 19), but I still get regular bouts of bronchitis (about twice a year; every time I get a cold). I also have had allergy problems since I was 12. I’ve never discovered exactly what I’m allergic to, but I get irritation in my eyes, nose and throat, as well as mild wheeziness. I went to the doctor about it and he asked if I had close relatives with asthma. I said no, so he said it’s probably just hayfever.

My question is, could I possibly have had asthma for years, but was never diagnosed? And if so, is there any point in going to my GP about it? It doesn’t bother me much, apart from the recurring chest infections. Can leaving it untreated cause lung damage? Can your lungs be damaged by frequent bronchitis?

A: OK. Ignore PJ above, who said…” it would be a waste of time and resources to go in to the GP about it at this point. Your lungs can be damage by frequent lung infections. Next time you go in to the doctor – discuss this. It is not worth a special trip to the doctor. ” (!!!!!!) I despair sometimes, I really do! People like her should stay out of the health section. Rather than give crap advise why not just say you don’t know or avoid the question! There is no shame in it.

Poorly managed or undiagnosed asthma can cause long lasting damage to the lungs AND you risk having a bad episode which can be potentially life threatening- this is the main risk. When you take asthma medication, you don’t just take it to relieve an attack, you take it for prophylaxis too.

If you are asthmatic, you need to be diagnosed so proper management can be prescribed. Please see your GP.

Q: Question about Eczema treatments….?
As a child I had severe eczema and asthma problems. As an adult my asthma is nearly non-existent with the occasional episode here or there, however the eczema stayed but only mildly. It is driving me crazy though and I have been to see a whole heap of doctors had tests done, and had the steroid creams like advantan and elicon. I can’t use SORBOLENE on my skin as I am ALLERGIC to it from over use as a child. I heard somewhere that eczema comes from the blood stream and to cleanse the eczema you need, to cleanse your insides. There was a liquid years ago that you drunk to try and get rid of the eczema. Does anyone know of any tips or treatments other than those mentioned to get rid of eczema? If you can’t tell I am a girl and waxing or shaving my legs becomes a problem because of the eczema and when the hair grows back it itches ten times worse than most women I know.

Q: What to do for a child with a cold when the child has severe allergies and asthma?
With OTC meds now not being recommended for children really under the age of 6, what can you do to ease the cough in order to keep the lungs from becoming inflamed causing the child to end up having bronciolitis (which always happens to my kids) or asthma attacks. They, ages 4 and 2 yrs, have nebulizers to try to prevent attacks with albuterol and pulmicort, but have no inhalers to stop an acute attack. They also are on Zyrtec and singular from their allergy specialist b/c they are allergic to enviromental things and other things that can kill them. I do the steam treatments in the bathroom, the vapor rub, and the vapor plug-ins to help with the congestion that even their allergy meds can’t help really with a cold but still it doesn’t ease a cough. I am NOT looking for someone to tell me to stop prescriptions and go all natural with my kids b/c with everything they’re allergic to it’s WAY too risky. please be polite and respectful with ur answers and try to help not put down others.
neminly – I want to make this clear, i am NOT bashing natural at all. I think it’s great if it works for u. we use fragrance free & dye free products due to our children, use natural products to clean. As far as foods go, w/what little they do eat (they’ve become far more than just picky eaters since the food allergies happened) it is safe .Allergies can kill my kids w/the food allergies (organically grown or not) & animal allergies they have. i’ve seen what happens first hand which ended up in the use of an epi-pen. there’s not much you can either about being really allergic to the grass in our yard & surrounding yards either along w/the trees. I can do what i can in the house but that’s not going to matter when they’re out in the world, staying w/someone or at school. the medications are a must. I know how to deal w/all of my kids allergies & cope w/asthma and eczema. its not just chemicals that are triggers. i’m asking for help w/the cough during a cold to prevent the worst outcome

A: The person who posted this “The allergies and asthma aren’t going to kill your children” is WRONG. People DO die from Asthma! Especially severe sudden attacks.

My son (now 28) had allergies and asthma so severe, we lived in a sterile environment for 5 years! He still has Asthma, but has maybe one attack a year.

As for the cough, yeah, OTC med’s aren’t being recommended to young children much. You could try a warm honey tea if there are no food sensitivities (you can get caffeine free tea). Keep the air moist. Dry air really triggers coughing. Laying flat in bed doesn’t help either. Always prop up one end of the bed. I found that helped with the coughing too.

If possible, call a pharmacist if you can’t reach your doctor. He or she may be able to give you more advice.
